It is vital to select a high-quality rehabilitation program with skilled professionals
to help a newly-injured person develop the skills needed to maintain physical and
emotional health throughout a lifetime.
The Rehabcentre at Little Company of Mary San Pedro Hospital offers a comprehensive
acute rehabilitation spinal cord injury program for those who are experiencing a loss of
sensation, muscle weakness or paralysis due to spinal cord damage or those recovering from
spinal surgery. The goal of rehabilitation is to enable the patient to return to an active
and productive lifestyle. Our program helps the patient adapt to the injury and learn the
basics of daily care.
Candidates for our program must be at least 18 years of age, be medically stable, have the
ability to progress up to three hours of therapy daily, show gains in therapy, and have
support upon discharge.
The Spinal Cord Team
Leading our team is the Medical Director, board certified in Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation, with the assistance of Dr. Sonka-Maarek, who is one of the few nationally
certified Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation physicians with a sub-specialty in Spinal
Cord Injury Medicine. The team includes physical therapists, occupational therapists,
recreation therapists, speech and language pathologists, certified rehabilitation nurses,
psychologists, registered dietitians, social workers, case managers and other professionals.
And since we believe it is critically important for patients and their families to be active
participants in rehabilitation, all are involved in establishing goals. Family members are
encouraged to participate in treatment sessions along with the
patient.
