Each year, 72 million Americans experience serious injury, stroke or disabling
disease. Another 145,000 will undergo joint replacement surgery. However, less
than 60 percent of these individuals receive adequate rehabilitation, even though
it is the most effective treatment for disability.
For those who receive multiple injuries due to serious accidents or those recovering
from major joint replacement, amputation, or other orthopedic trauma, the Rehabcentre
at Little Company of Mary San Pedro Hospital offers a comprehensive acute
rehabilitation program. The ultimate goal of rehabilitation is to help patients regain
lost abilities, achieve the highest level of independence possible, and help them adapt
to lifestyle changes.
Program admission criteria includes medical necessity, joint replacement with
medically-complex conditions, ability to participate in three hours of therapy,
progress made during therapy, and support upon discharge to
home.
The Therapeutic Team
Leading our team is the Medical Director, board certified in Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation. The team includes physical therapists, occupational therapists, recreation
therapists, certified rehabilitation nurses, psychologists, registered dietitians, social
workers, case managers and other professionals. And since we believe it is critically
important for patients and their families to be active participants in rehabilitation, all
are involved in establishing goals. Family members are encouraged to participate in treatment
sessions along with the patient.
Program Benefits
The intensive therapy program provides an individualized treatment plan based on the medical
and functional needs of the patient. Benefits include:
Sexual Functioning - Patients are educated on the physical functioning of
their bodies, as well as the psychological aspects.
Community Reintegration - Community outings are used to practice higher
level mobility, endurance, and safety skills.
