What is the Rehabcentre?
The Rehabcentre is a comprehensive rehabilitation program designed to help people who have experienced disabling conditions such as strokes, brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, hip fractures and other orthopedic or neurological conditions. The goal of the Rehabcentre is to help each patient return to his or her highest possible level of independence. A team of skilled professionals will provide your care and work with you to help you reach your goals.

Since independence is usually the primary goal, you will be expected to do as much for yourself as possible. The nursing staff and therapists will assist with things like dressing, eating, showering, and pushing your wheelchair and walking, but you will be expected to perform as many of these and other activities of daily living that you are physically able to. This is often very different from other hospitals and it may take some getting used to. However, hard work is required for you to regain your independence and ability to function.

During your rehabilitation with us, a therapist may evaluate your home or living arrangements to see how you are likely to get along at home. They will also be available to recommend any equipment that you may require. In addition, as part of your rehabilitation program, you will probably venture out into the community with therapists to practice what you will be learning in therapy. With your doctor’s approval, your family may also be able to take you out on a brief pass after they have been trained by the Team to assist you in a safe manner.

How do I get information from the Team?
You will learn from the Team members in a number of ways. You can always ask questions of any member of our staff or your doctors. Therapy sessions and nursing treatments are always designed to include an educational component. When a staff member is explaining a particular exercise, process or medical issue, it’s OK to stop and ask them to re-explain or have the information provided in another manner. In addition to extensive one-on-one work with our Team, you will also have the opportunity to participate in small group exercises and class sessions. A Family Conference may be held during your stay, at which time you and your family will have an opportunity to discuss your progress and plans for discharge with the physician and key members of the team.
