“For five weeks I was in the acute care program. Every day, the therapists put me through the paces,” said Nakano. “I had twice a day sessions with both physical therapists and occupational therapists to get me to a comfortable level of functioning.”

After his five week program, the doctor prescribed outpatient therapy twice a week. Dr. Clint Patterson, Director of rehabcentre, is pleased with Nakano’s progress.

Though Nakano’s progress is excellent, he did have a seizure several months ago that had some of the same characteristics as a stroke. “It was a bit frightening,” commented Nakano. “It turned out that it wasn’t a stroke. Physicians aren’t quite sure what it was, but it didn’t leave any lasting problems.”

Now with a new program at rehabcentre to educate stroke survivors about preventing a second stroke and knowing the warning signs of a second stroke, Dennis is sure he will be prepared if and when stroke symptoms appear.

“Having a stroke is a frightening experience,” said Nakano. “I hope I never have to experience another one, so I’m doing what I can to prevent it from ever happening again.”
