The first step in evaluating a facility is taking a tour. Write down as
many observations as possible. This will help you remember specific likes
or dislikes when you begin to compare the different facilities. Evaluating
the facility, talking with staff and observing therapies can help alleviate
anxiety and make the admission process smoother once the decision is made.
During the tour, make note of the physical appearance of
the facility:
- Is it physically user-friendly?
- Does it feel comfortable?
Also, pay particular attention to the staff. Look for physical, occupational,
and speech therapists that are licensed. This means the therapists have met
state-mandated standards and have not violated the codes of the profession.
Observe therapy to see how the therapists interact with patients and
ask:
- Do they have experience with the age group of the
prospective patient?
- Do they speak about real-life goals and
accomplishments?
- Will you have a say in the therapeutic
program?
- What percentage of patients is successfully
discharged to home?
Find out the nurse-to-patient ratio and the ratio of nurses to
nursing aides.
- Do the nurses demonstrate a high level of enthusiasm,
competence and warmth?
- Are they considerate and respectful of patients and
their families?
- Do they call patients by name and treat them with
respect?
