How To Choose an Acute Rehabilitation Program
Most of us dont think about the effects that a stroke or other traumatic brain
injury can have not only on the patient, but on the family, as well. The period
following this type of traumatic event can be frightening and confusing, but choosing
a rehabilitation facility is a decision that must be made with cool analysis. Usually
the physician will recommend a facility and the level of treatment needed. There will
be other options, however, and it is up to you to check with insurance companies, other
medical professionals, friends who have experienced similar circumstances and national
organizations related to specific injuries, such as the Brain Injury Association and
the National Stroke Association, to make the best choice regarding treatment
and care.
Rehabilitation is available in a variety of facilities and levels of intensity. The
Rehabcentre at San Pedro Peninsula Hospital is an acute rehabilitation unit. This very
intense program is not recommended for all patients. Sub-acute rehabilitation, which
includes approximately two hours of therapy per day, is available at several other
facilities. The best approach is to work with your doctor and the therapy staff to
determine the most appropriate program for you or your family member. Often the most
helpful resource will be a physician who specializes in rehabilitation a Board
Certified Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation physician, or Physiatrist. Physiatrists
are on staff and available for consultation to patients and families of those in any
Little Company of Mary facility. They are happy to answer questions and make
recommendations about appropriate levels of care, based on individual needs.
