Gloria and her brother were becoming even more frustrated with the lack of progress. Because Gloria thought the insurance company would steer her in the right direction, she didn’t pursue other options. Finally, she decided it was time to look elsewhere for help.

“I found a physician who specialized in Acute Rehabilitation Medicine. After an assessment, I found out from the doctor that with intense, long-term therapy my brother could improve and eventually go home,” said Gloria. “I started to search out other rehab facilities, meeting with the medical directors and touring the sites. When I went to San Pedro Peninsula Hospital’s Rehabcentre, I saw people with spinal cord injuries, head trauma cases and stroke survivors receiving treatment and therapy and improving their daily living skills. That’s when I realized there were places that my brother would receive treatment that would give him an opportunity to learn to speak, walk and do the simple things we all take for granted.”

After working with his case manager, Juan was moved into San Pedro Peninsula Hospital’s Rehabcentre. One of the reasons Gloria chose the facility was because she had read that one of the most widely respected rehabilitation facility survey organizations, called CARF (Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities), had rated SPPH Rehabcentre one of the best facilities when it comes to returning people to their own home.

Nearly a year later, Juan is able to speak with some difficulty, walk with the help of a walker and go to the bathroom by himself. Gloria believes that Juan would still be propped up in a bed if he were still at the other rehab center.

“My advice to anyone is to do your homework when it comes to rehabilitation facilities. Know the difference between acute rehabilitation versus sub-acute. Acute rehabilitation means three hours of intense therapy five times a week, Monday through Friday. I learned the hard way that acute rehabilitation is different from other programs, and San Pedro Peninsula Hospital’s Rehabcentre was exactly what my brother needed,” said Garcia.
